Duties:
The George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah seeks a Cardiology Staff Phys! ician.

The Cardiology Staff Physician is an academic physician responsible for carrying out operations of the Cardiology Section of the Medicine Service. The staff physician collaborates with the Section Chief to determine the mission and objectives of the Section. The incumbent understands the Section priorities and objectives and facilitates accomplishment of the objectives in collaboration with the Cardiology Section Chief. In addition to clinical matters, the Staff Physician participates in the education, training, and research missions of the Section and Service.

A subspecialty in Advanced Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Assist and at least 5 years of post-fellowship experience is preferred. Duties may include staffing outpatient clinics, inpatient and outpatient consultation, interpretation of electrocardiograms, stress tests, echocardiograms, cardiac catheterization (including pericardiocenthesis and endomyocardial bi! opsies), and supervision of cardiac rehabilitation. Board cert! ified in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure/transport Cardiology is preferred. Incumbent should have credentials sufficient for academic appointment at the University of Utah, Department of Medicine, at or above the Assistant Professor level. Additionally, candidate should show a track record of academic productivity and research grant support is preferred.

This advertisement is for a Part-time position, with 5/8ths appointment ( 50-Hours Per Pay Period) at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Qualifications & Evaluations

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidate is a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. A! pproved Schools are:
  • Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. Approved residencies are:
  • Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association,! in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
  • Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
  • English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written English in order to perform the duties of this position.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
(1) Past or present faculty appointment in an approved medical school or

(2) Completion of an accredited residency in the specialty area to which the individual is being assigned or in a related area, or

(3) Current eligibility to sit for the board certification examination in the specialty area to which the individual is being assign! ed or in a related area, or

(4) Comparable achievements in clinical, educational, administrative or research activities.
