Is responsible for facilitating the education and evaluation of recipients and live donors pre- and post-transplantation and is responsible for ongoing assessment, monitoring, education and intervention in the care of the transplanted patients. The coordinator provides education to health care providers and the general public regarding their specific area of transplantation and organ donation.
This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.
Responsibilities:
- Educates recipients, recipientâs families and pot! ential donors regarding transplantation, expected outcomes, tissue typing, risks, complications and patient responsibilities. Provides emotional support to family members.
- Evaluates, interviews and screens potential LVAD recipients, transplant candidates and donors using pre-determined criteria; schedules lab work and procedures to evaluate potential recipients and donors and compiles reports.
- Schedules live donor transplants and assists in transplant procedures during live donor transplants.
- Obtains cadaver donor information; authorizes final cross match; contacts the recipient; assesses the recipientâs health; and coordinates hospital admission.
- Prepares patient for discharge by educating patient and family regarding problems, medication, home monitoring, lab tests, clinic visits, daily activities and routine follow-up.
- Reviews patient lab tests, patient monitoring records, and assesses patient problems.
- Participates! in hospital committees and staff meetings; participates in patient car! e conferences and continuing education to keep abreast of latest trends in transplantation.
- Provides transplant education to nursing staff and provides public education regarding renal transplantation and organ donation.
- Promotes the University of Utah Transplant Programs to internal and external customers to maintain an increase in patient referrals.
- Participates in the development of all department policies and protocols and research projects.
- Monitors the electronic submission of all UNOS registration and follow-up forms.
- May coordinate LVAD patientâs admission and collaborate with the surgeon to ensure appropriate admission, surgery and post surgery care.
- May supervise and evaluate department support staff.
- May assist in developing the department budget and recommending annual adjustments.
- Works closely with insurance company case managers and provides transplant information, insurance coverage an! d contractual agreements to third party reimbursement.
- Demonstrated potential ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above.
- Ability to provide care to the population served.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patientâs status and provide care as described in the departmentâs policies and procedures manual.
- Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to function calmly and competently in high stress situations.
- Ability to display mental and emotional stamina in situations dealing with death, multiple patients, family members, etc.
All of the following license(s)
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 30 days of hire under t! he interstate compact.
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider! card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire.
Preferred
- Bachelorâs degree in nursing.
- Five years of clinical nursing experience in the specific functional area.
