Research Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic, and independent Research Specialist , with an interest in developmental biology and cancer research to work in a fast-paced and dynamic basic science lab. The Ewald Lab studies the molecular control of cancer metastasis through a combination of advanced 3D culture models and both genetically engineered (GEMM) and patient derived (PDX) models of cancer metastasis.

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be able to devote time to research and the past three research specialists in the lab have all made substantial research contributions. Ewald Lab research requires an understanding of the theory behind molecular and cell biology experiments and applying analytical skills to design and trouble-shoot complex experiments. Successful completion of these responsibilities will require extensive knowledge of the overall objectives and interests of the lab's research and it is anticipated that they could contribute (as author or as acknowledged technical contributor) to research manuscripts. The applicant needs to be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsible for the design and management of both the GEMM and PDX animal colonies, which involves working independently with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows to identify strains of mice, genotypes, and patient tumor subtypes necessary for their work.
Maintenance of this >300 cage mouse colony involves planning and setting up breedings, weaning mice, tagging, tailing, and genotyping mice.
The cancer models require specialized data collection on tumor progression in each mouse, analysis of the results of sophisticated genetic crosses, and highly skilled small animal surgeries.
These analyses require designing and updating computational databases describing the natural history of disease in the animal models and the results of molecular interventions.
Responsible for teaching the basics of mouse genetics and colony management to all new lab members.
They will also be responsible for managing the capital equipment, supply and consumable purchasing, and allocation of expenditures to grants based on an understanding of which personnel relate to which project.
Responsible for maintaining lab compliance with and renewal of recombinant DNA, biohazard, human tissue, and ACUC animal protocols in an independent fashion.
In summary, will act as a representative of the PI within the lab, to equipment and supply vendors, to various regulatory compliances units of JH Medicine, and with lab personnel and PIs in the Center for Cell Dynamics and the Department of Cell Biology.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
1 year of related laboratory experience.
Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with management of a large genetically-complex mouse colony is strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:
Prior experience with mice in a laboratory setting is required.
A willingness to work with mice daily and careful recordkeeping of their genotypes are both required.
Exceptional organizational ability and attention to detail are required.
A strong working knowledge of genetics is required.
