The perioperative nurse is a professional who is responsible for possessing the basic knowledge and ability to confidently perform the duties and tasks necessary to accomplish the consistent delivery of quality care to the surgical patient. The perioperative nurse will utilize the components of the nursing process in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position. This process includes the assessment of simple and complex needs for each patient, and the planning, implementation and evaluation of the care delivered in the operating room to which they are assigned.
The perioperative nurse is a registered professional nurse who is responsible for the provision of patient care in the OR and is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager and/or charge nurse designee. He/she must demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member and must be able to communicate, listen, report, and gather crucial data in a manner that enhances patient outcomes. He/she must also be able to utilize the computer charting system.
The Operating Room supports professional growth through education activities, attendance and participation on unit or hospital committees, Quality Improvement projects, and/or membership in professional organizations.

U.S. Citizenship
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.
Must pass pre-employment examination.
Designated and/or Random Drug Testing required.

DUTIES:
MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assessment:
- The patient interview process and judgment of individualized needs.
- Confirmation of the surgical procedure(s) to be performed and correct operative site.
- Appropriate "consent for surgery" has been signed, witnessed, and dated correctly.
- Gathering of pertinent patient data and current lab reports.
- Determining environmental, equipment and instrumentation requirements needed for the scheduled or emergent procedure.
He/She will collaborate with the anesthesia care provider, scrub nurse, and the surgical attending or resident responsible for initiating the case. Notification of ancillary service personnel for additionally required needs, ie. intraoperative x-ray, cell saver, etc., procuring of special equipment and instrumentation necessary to perform the scheduled procedure. Ensuring that all such equipment and instrumentation is complete and in good working order at the beginning of each case.
Implementation :
- Working with the scrub nurse assigned to prepare the designated operating room for the scheduled procedure(s).
- Gathering all supplies and equipment for positioning, preparing and securing the patient safely for the procedure planned.
- The perioperative nurse is responsible for entering patient care data related to the perioperative course in the computerized patient record.
- The perioperative nurse is responsible for the direct observation and supervision of any and all activities in the operating room during a procedure, ensuring the maintenance of sterile technique and that breaches are dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner.
- The perioperative nurse assumes responsibility for all patient care activities preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively in the designated operating room.
- The perioperative nurse responsible for providing assistance to the anesthesia care provider during the induction, intubation and extubation procedures. Offering supportive measures as directed, ie. positioning and padding appropriately, applying cricoid pressure when needed, assisting with suctioning, turning, application and/or removal of monitoring devices, and remaining alert to changes from baseline parameters of the patient throughout the case.
- The perioperative nurse is responsible for prioritizing and organizing patient care related activities in the operating room assigned in order that the scheduled cases are completed in an efficient and timely manner.
An ongoing monitoring sequence by the assigned nurse during the perioperative course for each patient. All patient-directed activities are continuously scrutinized and any necessary changes and/or alterations in the case delivery process are facilitated in order to effect the best possible outcome for the patient.
Charge Nurse Delegation/Management of Patient Care
Functions competently as a charge nurse
- Makes patient assignments based on scope of care/practice and completes the 24-hour report.
- Demonstrates ability to manage the daily operations related to surgical schedule taking into consideration the elective, urgent, and emergent cases pending.
- Participates in clinical supervision of nursing staff, nursing students, medical students, and new orientees through role modeling and communicating objectives and expected competencies of above personnel.
- Collaborates with team members, other disciplines, and patient/significant others.
- Recognizes and uses the knowledge and expertise of colleagues and other health care providers in meeting patient care needs.
- Follows guidelines for charge nurse role outlined in the unit policy and procedure manual
- Assures adequate and competent staffing is available for elective case load, as well as possible emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Internal qualified candidates from Salt Lake City VA will have first consideration.
Citizen of the United States.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

OTHER INFORMATION:
This position will be filled full time, 10 hour shifts with rotating week days off, also to include on-call duties. Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.
