The Division of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center is seeking applicants for a position as a Genetic Counselor within the Division. To qualify for the position, applicant! s must have a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling and be licensed to practice as a Genetic Counselor in the state of Utah. A broad knowledge base of current developments in treating, diagnosing and counseling in genetics is required. The ability to research and review scientific literature and publications is essential to performing effectively in the position. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are mandatory.

DUTIES

1. Conduct and record complete genetic histories for patients referred for genetic testing

2. Prepare family pedigrees

3. Counsel patients and their families regarding the results of their genetic testing

4. Provide individualized patient and family education, emotional support and counseling including options for current diagnostic testing, care and intervention, and future ramifications for self, family or offspring
5. Coordinate and present reviews of appropriate cases of ! care to peers, residents, students and colleagues

6. Communicate clearly and directly in oral and written form to providers and patients

7. Participate in peer review by providing and receiving objective and constructive feedback with other team members

QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program, or equivalency; board certification or eligibility from the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetics Counseling; the ability to work independently; and counseling abilities and clinical judgment skills required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required within two years of hire.
