MINIMUM EXPERIENCE GS-7: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at the GS-7 level. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-06 level in Federal Service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, protocol to select correct instruments for procedures, and aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; uses of sterilizer techniques, including sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging storage, and shelf life; proper cleaning techniques and the types of detergents to use on various items; as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies, handling of contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene; having an in-depth knowledge of universal precautions and knowing how to implement infection control and procedures; understanding of complex surgical procedures and possible complications in order to prepare for the procedure; having a thorough understanding of all appropriate names, uses physical characteristics, function and processing procedures for the full ranges of surgical supplies and equipment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-7: having one (1) year or more of successfully completed graduate-level education or an internship with courses directly related to the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, eighteen (18) semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (Transcripts required.)
