General FunctionThis position participates as a team member in overall activities for ARUPs Employee Health Clinic. Areas of responsibility include patient care, clinic support, health service reception/medical records, laboratory, and health education. This position reports to the Clinic Manager. This position is responsible to assist in maintaining a well-stocked clinic, attain and maintain technological/computer skills, education, and participate in continuing education to maintain proficiency in Medical Assistant duties and as an ARUP team member.Reporting FunctionThis position reports to the Manager of the Employee Health Clinic and directly supports the licensed providers.Essential FunctionsCustomer Service Greet patients, families, employees, visitors, and all others in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner. Promotes ARUP at Wellness fairs, new hire orientation, and other campus/community events.Clinical Support Escort patients to exam rooms, take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure), review history, and test vision when indicated. Based on assessment and stated needs, set up room and prepare patient for exam. This includes and is not limited to provide gown, initiate collection of lab specimens, lab forms, worksheets, set up medical equipment, and supplies. Make accurate observations and document patients physical and mental condition. Convey to provider (physician, PA, nurse practitioner, etc.) in a confidential manner. Assist provider with illness, injury, well care exams, treatment, and minor surgery by positioning patient, preparing instruments, cleaning wound area, retraction to expose site for provider, handing instruments to provider, bandaging wound, applying principles of aseptic technique, and infection control. When ordered, perform screening procedures such as EKGs, lung capacity, etc. After completion and documentation of training, maintenance, and proficiency, and under provider supervision, administer immunizations and other forms of injections. Recognize and respond to emergent needs within level of training and capability, including CPR, Heimlich, and other emergency responses. Call 911 when appropriate.10. Perform basic laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, rapid strep, pregnancy testing, etc. In addition, perform phlebotomy as needed for specimen collection.11. Prepare specimens for sending to the laboratory and pull results from reference lab sources.12. Learn to use and develop new computer competencies as needed in performing assigned responsibilities.Patient Education13. Instruct and demonstrate therapeutic techniques to patients (i.e., crutch, cane use, etc.). Apply orthopedic devices after evaluation and as instructed by provider.14. Identify community resources available to assist in resolving patients problems and communicate them to the patient.15. Provide supervision and training of student personnel.16. Assist is acquiring new learning materials as requested.17. Provide advanced patient education/health related information within level of training and authority including basic food groups and side effects of medications.Administrative18. Conduct inventory, order, and maintain medical and other clinic supplies, according to ARUP guidelines, utilize appropriate vendors. Confirm that ordered supplies are received and correct.19. Enter proper procedural and diagnostic coding and billing process on charge tickets.20. Carry out procedures defined for the drug-room assignment, including dispensing medications, patient teaching, recordings in logs, and entering coding and billing detail into applicable software module.21. Use electronic technology to receive, organize and prioritize information and assignments.22. Recognize and follow local, state, and federal risk management and safety procedures.23. Recognize and meet professional credentialing, maintain skill check lists for clinical functioning.24. Assists Receptionist with the maintenance of the inventory system for health education materials in exam rooms, lobby/waiting areas.25. Assist with patient requests for health information.Infection Control26. Clean, sterilize, and perform basic maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and proper functioning. 27. Oversee exam room and minor surgery cleaning, and disposal of medical waste, stocking daily, weekly, and end of day clean up. Quality Improvement28. Participate and contribute in staff meetings and other work groups as needed. Participate in the development and implementation of systems to improve the efficiency and quality of work at ARUP.29. Participate in Quality Assurance activities, including conducting MA peer reviews, maintaining procedure manuals, meeting accreditation requirements, and contributing to QA studies as assigned.30. Perform quality control steps for instrumentation. 31. Participate in organizational committees as requested.32. Participate in the development and implementation of systems to improve the efficiency and quality of work in ARUP. Job Qualifications Education/Credentials required High School diploma or equivalent Education/Credentials preferred Certification from a Medical Assistant course or EMT certification Experience/skills required Intermediate knowledge of medical terminology Two years of full-time experience in a medical clinic or healthcare setting functioning as a Medical Assistant or EMT. Experience/skills preferred Previous work experience in an outpatient setting Two years of experience performing initial triage, taking vital signs, phlebotomy, patient assessments, utilizing EMR and medical documentation Physical and other requirements Demonstrate ability to prioritize, organize, problem solve, troubleshooting, perform multiple tasks, and adapt to change Regular and reliable attendance Excellent customer service skills Ability to work well with others Ability to work long hours as needed Must be able to sit and/or stand for extensive periods of time Excellent ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal Fine motor coordination Good visual acuity including color perception Mobility Ability to organize work, to meet deadlines, and to work under stressful conditions Ability to work all required overtime and take call as needed· Must be able to lift 50 pounds
